About Me

Get to know the person behind Coach de Cöning.

My name is Leoni de Cöning.  I am a Certified NLP Practitioner and Life Coach and I can help you make the CHOICE to take the CHANCE to make the CHANGE you want in your life.  My experience and skills provide sources in partnership with my clients. My aim is to develop aptitude and performance through result-based resolutions.

I recently decided to leave the corporate world to pursue a full time career in life coaching. I believe that as a corporate employee and leader, I had the opportunity to inspire and positively influence my colleagues and teams. To me, nothing is more rewarding to see their happy smiles.  That is what made me survive and flourish in the corporate environment.  As a result, I had a meaningful and fulfilling career.   I’ve been inspired by many stories, events and people in my life and was fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to take this bold step and here I am,  Living the dream!  Hoping my Life Stories can inspire you.   I am making it sound so easy and glamorous, but it comes at a price.  The uncertainty of what the future may hold and moving out of my comfort zone.  A price I am willing to pay to make a difference in people’s lives. My purpose is to help people find balance in their lives.  I quote the famous Mahatma Ghandi;

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.

This quote has also been proven through science and represents a phenomenon known as positive neuro-plasticity.  This approach changed my life and allowed me to overcome many challenges and obstacles.

My Story

I am 46 years old and I grew up  in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal. My childhood was not plain sailing.  I got married straight out of school and I have two sons, Rudi is now 29 years old and Leon 27.  I was widowed at the age of 21 and moved to Cape Town with the boys.  That’s where we settled and I raised them single-handedly to become successful and well-adjusted young adults. During 2010 I moved to Johannesburg having an opportunity to advance my career.  This was very tough decision.

My life has not been an easy ride.  It was challenging and I often felt demoralised.  With the bitter comes the sweet and on the whole my life has been rewarding.  I have made mistakes, learnt many lessons and have grown significantly.  Raising two children on my own was a huge challenge and responsibility.  I was, however, dedicated to ensure that they lived balanced and normal lives, albeit without a father.   However, in the process, I neglected my own emotional well-being and health.  I needed to be strong and supportive to them and not show weakness – never allowing myself to be vulnerable and deal with the trauma I had experienced having lost a husband at a young age.  In an attempt to escape reality, I indulged in comfort eating. To such an extent that at one stage I weighed 170kg.  Not quite comprehending what anguish I had caused to myself and my kids, family and friends in the process.  Being stuck in a grossly obese body is the loneliest and saddest  place to be.  The missed opportunities of having FUN because of my discomfort and low self esteem as a grossly obese woman.  The teasing from the boys’ friends and not being able to do join them in many activities.  My health deteriorated and I lost my dignity and self-respect.   At that stage of my life I had reached a turning point. My life was at stake and had to take drastic measures. With immeasurable difficulty I managed to turn it around.   Today I am a healthy active woman, leading a normal live.  I lost 90 kilograms in the process and have competed in (and completed) many marathons, cycling races and most recently, the Midmar Mile.   I have decided to dedicate the rest of my life to help people live happy and contented lives. I want to give people hope by believing that one can achieve so much more when applying one’s mind. Feel free to scroll to my stories for some inspiration.

My Experience

During my career I observed, listened and learnt to develop into a relatively balanced and ‘together’ person.  Leading and managing 64 people (9 teams) in all the regions allowed me to understand and effectively deal with diverse personalities and cultures.  I embraced the challenges and learnt from mistakes and developed my teams into innovative, efficient and self sufficient teams.   In the process I have acquired many skills in coaching individuals and teams for results.  I have an all-encompassing understanding of the corporate world and the challenges it poses and stresses that come with it. I have solid comprehension of the big picture, how things are connected and how life’s puzzle pieces fit together.

People will remember me for being there to support, assist, keep an open mind and always being honest and ethical.

I strive to be a

well-rounded human being who is respected by my children, family, friends, loved ones, acquaintances and clients. I am committed to make a positive difference despite my flaws. My work as couch reflects my values. My values empower me to augment the lives of others.

My Purpose

As Life Coach is to mentor my clients to find meaning and value in living, not just for themselves but so too for others. I aspire to help them to recognise, develop, and utilise their inherent capabilities to flourish as human beings.  I am adamant to help others eliminate pessimism and downheartedness from their thoughts, vocabulary and actions.   Without knowing it, we all have resources through which we create our own experiences.  By facilitating my clients’ awareness of how they can tap into their resources and most wise identities. I endeavour to assist them in making their lives simpler, yet more meaningful.

My core values are the governing beliefs that dictate my behavior and action. It helps me to know what is right from wrong; they also support me to determine if I am on the right path with the correct behaviour in fulfilling my goals; and they create a solid and rigid guide.

Some of my values are:

Balance, Compassion, Friendships, Fun, Happiness, Humour, Love, Loyalty, Optimism and Self respect

My sole purpose is to make a difference in people’s life.
